Kempe’s Legislative Reception: Safeguarding Children in the Digital World

On Monday, January 27th, The Kempe Foundation hosted a legislative reception at the History Colorado Center, focusing on the increasingly complex challenge of keeping children and youth safe and healthy in our digital world. The event brought together legislators, community members, and experts to discuss the current risks of online harms and other 21st-century forms of child abuse.

The reception was co-hosted by legislators Senator Dafna Michaelson Jenet, Senator Lisa Frizell, and Representative Meghan Lukens, demonstrating a commitment to this important topic. Attendees heard from Warren Binford, Kempe’s Advocacy Director, who provided invaluable insights into the complexities of these modern threats facing children. Binford’s presentation, “21st Century Forms of Child Abuse and Advancing Research Worldwide to Understand How Tech Can Help or Hurt Children,” highlighted the need for greater understanding and awareness of how technology can both positively and negatively impact young people.

The goal of the legislative reception was to educate and raise awareness about the dangers children face in the digital age. It served as an opportunity to share information and provide a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding tech-facilitated harm. Importantly, this gathering was designed to inform and engage our community. By bringing together key stakeholders and sharing expert knowledge, Kempe aimed to initiate future collaborative efforts to protect children from online harm globally.
